IPL Photofacial

This facial is used to treat brown spots, sun damage, age spots, rosacea, and spider veins.

Treatment Expectations

We cleanse the area being treated thoroughly. After that, a topical numbing cream is applied to the area for 20-40 minutes. Once that is removed a cool gel is applied. During treatment, we sometimes use an air cooling system to increase patient comfort. The treatment consists of pulses of light energy delivering to the targeted area. This sensation is often described as a rubber band snap. Prior to the IPL Photofacial treatment, the cool gel is removed, and we apply a moisturizer and sunscreen. The treatment time is usually 30-60 minutes, but it depends on the size of area being treated.

Post and Pre-Treatment Care

A series of 3-5 treatments is required for optimal results. Treatments are 3-4 weeks apart, and to maintain results, follow up treatments are given once a year. Prior to treatment, patients should stop using retinoids 2 days prior. Patients should also not have suntan or artificial color on their skin. Skin should be as close to its natural color as possible. Self-tanning has to be discontinued two weeks prior to each treatment.

Unlike dermabrasion and laser resurfacing, IPL does not damage the skin’s surface. There is virtually no downtime because of that. After treatment however, patients should avoid retinoids, glycolics, exfoliators, or any other irritant. Moisturizer and sunscreen should be applied during this time.
